Fantasy Draft 1 for the Jetman
Guys,
I've been involved in my first full Fantasy Draft of the season & I have one more on Wed. night. I thought it went really well, though I was surprised at how many QBs went early. That seems to be the trend these days. I missed out on Brees as he went in the first round, but my team turned out pretty well IMO.
Round 1 -- S-Jax; 2-- Randy Moss 3 -- Larry Fitzgerald 4 -- Big Ben 5 -- Witten 6 -- Ernest Graham 7 -- Roddy White 8 -- Kevin Smith 9 -- Lendale White 10 -- Chicago D 11 -- Dwayne Bowe 12 -- Chris Johnson 13 -- Jon Kitna (YES, Jon Kitna!)
14 -- Steven Gostkowski
Overall, I'm pleased. I have a great WR/TE Crew with Moss, Fitz, and Witten. I have one stud RB in S-Jax. Big Ben is a Top 5/6 QB. My 2nd. RB is a question, but I picked up many different #2 candidates with Graham, Lendale White, and Kevin Smith. Roddy White is a nice #3 WR & Chris Johnson is a sleeper. This league stresses special teams, so the Chicago D has good value. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out...though I really wanted Brees.
Thoughts, guys?

I think overall you did great. Moss/Fitz will be unstoppable and Steven Jackson is fantastic. Plus Big Ben. The only thing like you said is your second RB. I would attempt to package maybe all three of smith, white, and graham for a better #2 but I would hold on to chris johnson. Overall though great draft jets.
Thanks, faulk. I do agree with your assessment. In Round 2, Randy Moss was clearly the best player available. He was still there as the league went QB-crazy in Round 1. Fitz. was the last elite WR in Round 3, so I scooped him up. In Round 4, I wanted to take Ben since only he & Derek Anderson were left in my "Tier 2" QBs. I was planning to take a 2nd. RB in Round 5, but Witten was still there & I love the guy. Therefore, I waited until the 6th. round to get my RB #2 (I've never done that before). To make up for it, I tried to give myself decent RB depth options later.
I might very well package 2 of those backs for a better #2 RB starter. I want to see how well Graham & Co. look before I pull that trigger.
Thanks for your input as always...and I hope your boy S-Jax comes through for me! He slipped to #7 in this draft probably because of his preseason contract issues -- I just had to scoop him up at that position.
Nice Job Jetman.. Getting Graham in the 7th was great.. I see you got Roddy White(nice) and also took Chris Johnson alo nice, IMO i can't see a weakness??
thanks, thaas. My #2 RB could be weak relative to other teams...depending on how Graham can perform. Other than that, I agree with you that it seems to be a well-rounded team.
I also like Big Ben, but he's not in the class with Brady, Manning, Romo, and Brees. Teams with these QBs will also be pretty strong.
Overall, I still like this team a lot. I love Moss/Fitz/Witten as my pass-catchers. It doesn't get much better than that.
Thanks for your input.
I was thinking the same thing but IMO Graham will do well, i was worried about Caddy early on but i guess he won't make it back this year, I think your fine.. Great Job
Thanks, thaas. I hope I do as well in my final draft tomorrow evening!
Good Luck.... Don't forget the crystal ball
Looks like a great team Jets. Did you have the 7th pick? You couldn't have done better with your first three picks. I obviously love the Big Ben pick. I'm drafting 8th and he's third on my wish list, behind Romo and Brees. I would have taken Witten when you did as well. The numbers he can put up on a weekly basis are right up there with a #2...and sometimes a #1 WR. My draft is tonight and I'm definately targeting him. I also think Graham is a steal in the 6th round. I've done several mocks and your picks are similar to what I've been seeing. (RB, WR, WR) There seems to be a definate power shift from RB's to WR's. A few years ago, drafts would focus on RB's above all else, now everyone seems willing to wait to later rounds to get their 2nd RB. The rest of your team looks solid as well.
Really a nice job. Like you, I got graham, but in the 7th. My league is a PPR, so more QBs went in first 2 rounds, and with 2 going in our first. Your first 4 picks are perfect.
your line up is very very strong, well done!!!
Thanks to my 2 favorite Steeler fans!
csgigliotti -- Yes, I had the 7th. pick. LT, A-Pete, Westy, Brady, Addai, and Manning went 1 - 6th. I just had to get S-Jax at the 7th. slot. I was hoping Brees would come back to me in Round 2, but both he & Romo were taken within the next 3 picks. Because of that, Randy Moss fell to me at slot #14. (Gore, Portis, Barber, & Lynch also went before me).
There is definitely a major shift from RBs to QBs & WRs in the first 2 rounds this season. Last year's results have caused a big change in fantasy draft strategy...and you have to adapt accordingly. I still think it is important to get a stud RB first if you can. After that, I think you can wait and get a RB #2 later as the depth is there. You don't want to miss out on elite WRs & QBs for a #2 RB at this day & age IMO.
I'm really hoping for big things from Big Ben here. I hope he develops great chemistry with Santonio Holmes as both of those guys have big fantasy seasons.
Thanks for your inputs, Steeler fans!
Good news Jetman,, Caddy is starting year on PUP, not eligible to play till week 7, Great news for Graham owners
Thanks for the info, thaas. I feel bad for Caddy, but it is good news for Graham owners. He only has to share some time with Dunn...but Dunn is just a 3rd down RB at this point in his career.
The combo of Moss/Fitz should prove to be a lethal one. To get the two of them all the while taking Jackson and still coming away with Big Ben AND Witten is huge. Graham is a capable guy who was consistent coming down the stretch last season and was also very involved in Gruden's scheme from a receiving perspective as well. If any of the 3 remaining RB's you selected, step up you're going give the opposition nightmares. White and Bowe round out a fine receiving corps. Great job, Jets!!!
Thanks, Mr. Eagle. I am pleased with how this draft turned out. I believe this is a nice, well-rounded team. Like you said, if I can find some good RB play from all my guys not named Steven Jackson, my team could do some serious damage.
fantastic team jets. As you've said, you can't have a stud at every position, but you may have pulled it off if Graham can play like he did last year. I can't believe you were able to get Moss in the second round. You got a lot of value on a lot of your picks and that's what needs to happen to pull of wins.
Congrats!
Thanks, Doomsday Dave & welcome back to rainy NC.
I can't believe I got Moss, either. It seemed like everyone was determined to either get a stud RB or QB with their first pick. Then, there were some good value RBs left at the beginning of Round 2 -- Portis, Lynch, etc. So, Moss just fell to me at #14 & I had to take him. That led to many WRs being taken & I was barely able to get a Top Flight #2 WR for my team in Fitz. I just had to take Witten in Round 5. I was glad to at least see Graham available in Round 6...RB options were getting slim at that point.
I am pleased with how this turned out & I hope I can do just as well in my final draft tomorrow night.
Thanks for your input, Dave...and everyone else!
